Barnhill officially opened in August 1970. The two storey block opened in April 1971. Barnhill Primary School is well known for having only three head teachers since its opening. Mr Steele was the first head teacher. He retired in 1983. Mr Johnstone was the second head teacher. The present head teacher is Mrs Pamela Nesbitt. The number of pupils at the school has rapidly increased with the development of new estates being built, such as the Panmurefield Village. In 1996, the addition of the nursery made the pupils at the school roll reaching all-time highs.
Barnhill Primary School is very much a Scottish school. Pupils are involved in concerts during the year to celebrate Scotland.
A Burns' Supper is held every year for Primary Seven pupils. Haggis, Neeps & Tatties are always on the menu. After the meal, the pupils perform Scottish Country Dances and Scottish songs to their parents in the school gym hall.[2]
Every year there is a St Andrew's Day Concert. Every class learns a poem or song written in Scots. The school then hosts a big assembly and each class performs their poem in front of the school.< ref name="barnhill.ea.dundeecity.sch.uk" />
Barnhill Primary School has classes ranging from Primary One to Primary Seven. It has a nursery and, for the first time in the 2010/2011 session there are 3 primary seven classes. The school has had new interactive whiteboards fitted in to most classrooms. This mades the school more up to date with technology and helps in the children's learning.[3] The school runs functions throughout the year.
